Angus Brangus

Beginning at my previous post on the cyberwoods, I discovered the website of a homemade mascot by the name of Angus Brangus. Angus is a friendly educational character who appears in the form of a dressed wooden mannequin. His goal is to teach others (namely Texans via the internet) about how to live thoughtfully and politely in America. Angus takes trips to the grocery store to watch for carts that are left unattended in the center of the aisle. One of his primary concerns is with “dead space” and the ways in which the misuse of public space can negatively affect others. Angus Brangus often quotes the philosopher John Stuart Mill in a hillbilly accent.

Kibo’s Cones
boon
wake
I was researching old Usenet groups and found a mock manifesto by James “Kibo” Parry about HappyWeb ’99: The New Future of the Net which proposed a replacement for Usenet on April Fools Day. Kibo seems to be one of the classic sassy users of the early web. His photos summed this up for me. A portion of his website is devoted to the futility of orange warning cones.

Kibo complains:

These “safety” cones are designed to be highly visible, but because of their ubiquity and meaninglessness, we’ve been ignoring them. And while we’ve been ignoring them they’ve been taking over the world.

Kibo’s obsession with documenting cones in their native environment culminated in a 1999 “contest” seeking photos of ineffective cones. Out of his large documentation of cones including “typical deployment,” and “strange positions” I have selected these five cones and arranged them in an effective composition.

I was collecting audio search results for “wind” at findsounds.com when the 7th result lead me to a wav file at the url www.thecyberwoods.com/wind.wav. I liked the title cyberwoods.com and removed wind.wav from the url to reveal the index. The site’s owner has kept a detailed cyber record of the woods on his property, including accounts of all trash found and all gun shots heard over the course of many years.
